One of my favorite fishing techniques is to use a spot remover and just about any soft plastic you can think of. That being said let me give you a quick fix that I think will help you get more consistent hook-ups using a spot remover.
If you look at the basic setup of a spot remover the hook point is actually inside the lead head. So a quick thing to always do is take a pair of pliers and bend the hook out. When you bend the hook out you want it to be just outside the lead head. Once you bend the hook you should be able to see very easily that the hook barb is now outside the head. Now all you have to do is apply your favorite soft plastic and go fishing.
This simple change will increase you hook-ups and those lost fish at the boat. Hope this helps and have a great time fishing in the future.
