Each July 4th our county proudly celebrates Independence Day. BBQs, family gatherings, and magnificent night time shows seem to be the norm. But Jeff Deckard, tournament director of the BLT at Stockton, broke away from the norm this past Sunday and held a star-spangled spectacular for all to enjoy. Jeff's July 4th event was a big success as 15 teams showed up to get in a little fishing on the day before all the night time festivals. On the day, 6 limits came to the scales and two fish over six pounds were weighed in.

Winning the event with a five fish limit going 20.50 lbs was the team of Devin Dick and Brad Carey. Devin and Brad's bag was anchored with Big Bass on the day a thunderous largemouth that blasted the scales at 7.06 lbs. They fished flatter, pea gravel banks scatter with brush using jigs and worms to take most of their fish. According to Brad, the windy banks were producing the best and their fish were holding in 10-12 feet of water. They reported having a limit in the boat early and then culled through 15 keepers to sack their great limit. For the win the team took home $250 and $70 for big bass.

In second was the one man team of Randy Conlon who “Junk Fished” his way to second place with five fish that bounced the scales at 17.82 lbs. Randy only had five keeper bites on the day and used a variety of lures including a worm, jig, and square bill to catch his fish. He started his day taking two fish from a brushpile and then when that dried up, went on the hunt for his remaining three keepers landing his final fish at 1:00 on a crankbait. For second Randy took home $150.

The third place team of Rick Fishback and DeWayne Weeks fished a similar pattern to the winners finding fish in that magical depth of 10-12 feet on flatter pea gravel banks and used a Chompers green/brown jig to catch nine legals on the day with their best five going 17.50 lbs. They too had a early limit and then culled them all out with the better fish they had later in the day. For third the team took home $100. The teams is sponsored by Chompers Baits, Table Rock Bait and Tackle, and Ulrich Marine.
